The main purpose of Thurtene carnival is to put on a wonderful community
event that brings together a multitude of student groups and brings the
outside St. Louis community on to campus for two days of good food, fun
rides and great entertainment.

In addition to being a fabulous community outreach event, Thurtene
Honorary selects a local St. Louis Children’s charity to partner with for
the carnival. The partnership allows the members of Thurtene Honorary
and other members from the Wash U community to volunteer with an
incredibly worthy organization. It also allows for Thurtene and other
organizations, that take place in the carnival, to give a charitable
donation at the conclusion of the carnival to a fabulous organization.

ST. LOUIS SCORES

St. Louis SCORES' mission is to inspire in urban children a lasting
dedication to education, healthy living, and civic responsibility.
America SCORES is the nation’s only after-school program that uses soccer,
creative writing, and community service to build healthy bodies, healthy
minds, and healthy communities among at-risk youth.

"Teaching kids to write is equivalent to teaching kids to think; giving kids
the tools to write is giving them the resources to be successful in life.
Combining all of this with soccer is like putting peanut butter with chocolate.
I am surprised every public school hasn't adopted a SCORES program."
- Best Selling Author Stephen King

America SCORES develops programs that use the world's most popular sport,
soccer, to energize and inspire public school students. All of our
programs require that our children use the teamwork they learn on the
soccer field to support each other as poets and authors in the classroom.
The combination is unique and it works. Every day, SCORES programs are
creating a bond between thousands of our students and their classmates,
their teachers, their schools and their communities!

Because now, more than ever, we need to improve public education from the
perspective of the customers of our public schools-our nation's 50 million
kids! What excites them about school? What inspires them to learn? What
gives them the drive to be successful? We think we have one of the answers
participation in team sports and team learning!
